Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto “are crazy with all the diamonds and everything” on the newly minted WBC Diamond belt for what WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman regards as “elite fighters.”
Arum told us both fighters “want that belt as well” in addition to the WBO welterweight belt that Cotto will put on the line when he battles Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 14.
Arum said the WBC Diamond Belt “ is something new and it adds to the excitement. I’m not against it. I’m fine with it.”
The astute Top Rank promoter said the Pacquiao-Cotto fight was “coming along sensationally. Tickets went on sale today to the public and I got the report at the end of the d ay and right now there are less than one thousand tickets for sale. Everything else is completely sold out.”
While Cotto has started training and getting into shape, Pacquiao continues to wind-up his movie-making, television appearances and various endorsements so that when he begins training he will be totally focused as he usually is.
Indications are that the bulk of his training will be done in Mexico with his adviser Michael Koncz checking out possible training camps where there is hilly terrain as well as flat land for Pacquiao to do his roadwork.
In the initial stages of his training regimen Pacquiao is likely to work out in Baguio City which has the kind of facilities and natural landscape for his rigorous training program.
Even trainer Freddie Roach has said he prefers Baguio to Cebu or any other place because the distractions are less which is also why Koncz would prefer Mexico to the Bahamas with its gambling casinos and nightlife.
