Margarito Says The Weight Will Hurt Cotto With Pacquiao

Former three time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito told The Record that he believes the agreed upon catch-weight of 145-pounds will be an issue for WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto when he steps in the ring with Manny Pacquiao on November 14 in Las Vegas.

"I think that Cotto is giving away too many advantages to Pacquiao if the fight is done at 145 pounds and even more if fight were to happen at 143 like Pacquiao wants. From the very first round, that advantage would be for Pacquiao because [Cotto] would be dehydrated like Oscar De La Hoya [when he fought Pacquiao last December]," Margarito said.

Margarito is back in camp, training and staying in shape to keep his body ready for a quick ring return. He lost his license in February when the California State Athletic Commission found him liable for an illegal substance found in his hand wraps prior to the January 24 bout with Shane Mosley. Margarito's lawyers are fighting the decision by the CSAC and he hopes to get back in the ring before 2010.

"I am training for anything that comes up, any opportunity. [My lawyers] told me that they are going to speak me during the following week to give me a new report. I don't know anything right now but I have faith that everything can be solved quick," Margarito said.

  2. nah 2-3 pounds will not affect him....cotto weighed 146 vs clottey...cotto will not affect hi wid those weights but definitely he will be affected by a weight of plaster inside a boxer's glove.

  3. Packy has become the spoiled brat of the boxing world despite his lack of trash talk. A welterweight belt at the limit of 145?? Funny. Boxing's integrity is really lost.

  4. Ahhh....Let the "Excuses" begin.

  5. yeah, lets give cotto all the advantages. after all he is the bigger guy.

  6. Can Pacquiao borrow the plaster of paris from Margarito. It will surely hurt Cotto. Bwahahahaha..

  7. Pacman's natural weight right now is 140. Let Cotto go down to 140. If he can't, then the fight is canceled. Why should advantages be given to Cotto? Let's see if Cotto would fight Paul Williams?..No catchweight.

  8. I believe that 147 lbs weight limit is fair to both Cotto & Pacquiao. May the best fighter win.

  9. yeah may the best fighter who doesn't use any substance wins. right Margacheato?

  10. Why 147? Pacquiao is not a welterweight. To make fights possible they do the catchweight. Cotto should take it or leave it. Pacquiao have many options.

  12. why do they always talk about the bigger guys weight? Dont they realize that paquiao fights at 108 lbs before ? that means manny is giving too much by fighting bigger opponents. manny should be the underdog cause he is smaller .

  13. smaller guy with big name wants to give bigger guy with some name a chance to make sweepstake money. Bigger says fight at 147, the lowest limit a can make. Smaller guy who has climb from 100 lbs to natural weight of 140 says, I will meet you at 145, 2 lbs under 147. Somebody then says not fair? Who is lacking common sense here?

  14. Pac can never catch a break. Pac is a better fighter than Cotto and everyone knows it. Pac is a light welter who is taking on a naturally bigger welter in Miguel Cotto and it would be murder if all the advantages goes to Cotto. It's only fair to meet half way at 145. 2 pounds will not make a damn difference for god sake! What's next, people will want to fight Manny to fight a heavy weight??? Come on guys....give the brave and courageous Pac for stepping up to someone who is way way bigger than him! Marquez is fighting Floyd at a catchweight of 144, how come nobody is critizing Marquez when him and Pac are the same size???

  18. If the fight (with Cotto) happens at 145, this will be the first time Pacman will fight in a catchweight. May I remind everyone that he fought DDiaz at 135, ODLH at 147 and Hatton at 140. So please stop maligning his good name. It is most unfair
