In a smart way, Cotto stops Pacquiao - De La Hoya

MANILA, Philippines – Oscar De La Hoya, one of Manny Pacquiao’s high-profile ring victims, sees the Filipino icon’s winning streak ending this time.

In a blog he wrote for The Ring, De La Hoya, who recently retired from boxing, said Pacquiao will be in for a rude surprise when he faces Puerto Rican bomber Miguel Angel Cotto on Nov. 14 (Nov. 15 in Manila).

“Now that the fight is getting closer, I’ve changed my mind about who I think will win. At first, I had Manny Pacquiao. I was a firm believer that Pacquiao’s speed was going to neutralize Miguel Cotto, especially after Cotto’s performance against Joshua Clottey in June,” the former multiple-division champion wrote.

“Then, as the fight was getting closer and closer and I thought more about it, I’m now convinced Cotto will win. The reason is, first, nobody looks good against Clottey. He’s a difficult, strong, in-your-face type of fighter. And Cotto had that gash over his eye the whole fight. I thought he did an excellent job in light of that,” he added.

De La Hoya said that at welterweight, Pacquiao does not pack enough punching power to be able to knock out a full-blown 147-pounder like Cotto. He cited his own welterweight duel with Pacquiao last December, where he was mercilessly battered by the Filipino but still managed to stay on his feet until his corner stopped the bout at the end of the eighth round.

“Cotto has a good chin and a big heart. He’s a natural welterweight who hits hard and is also smart and fast. Pacquiao doesn’t hit hard enough to knock anyone out in the welterweight division. I’m basing that on my fight against Pacquiao. I could’ve stood there and put my face in front of him and he couldn’t have hurt me,” he said.

De La Hoya had so much faith in Cotto that he thinks the Puerto Rican will be able to withstand whatever Pacquiao brings to the table.

“A lot of people are counting him (Cotto) out after his last performance. I think he’s the real deal, though. I’ve seen his skills and I’ve seen his power. He’s proved himself against tough, rugged guys. He’s proved himself against slick boxers,” he continued.

And the Golden Boy’s forecast? A late-round stoppage for Cotto.

“I think Cotto is a smart fighter. I think he’ll get through those first few rounds and in a smart way he’ll walk down Pacquiao and possibly stop him in the later rounds,” De La Hoya predicted.

  1. DLH need to stop predicting fights, he is such a sore loser and cannot accept that he was beaten by a small fighter pacman,it's the same prediction he made with hatton being the stronger and bigger fighter than pacman, remember you said you were in great shape when you fought pacman, then after losing you said you were old and drained fighter! So what's the truth! Cotto might be a bigger fighter, the bigger you are the harder you'll fall.. Remember that! And please! Just accept the truth thaa pacman was really good.

  2. If De la Hoya thinks PAcman doesn't have the power to knock him or anybody in the welter weight division. He must have not seen his face after his fight with pacman.
He quited on his stool on the nineth round. But what I saw was that on the eight round, he almost fell. if was not able to held on the ropes, it would have been a KO.
If he had'nt quited, he will suffer KO or probably death.....
So don't say that Pacman doesn't have the power cause you can't even stand him.

  7. Dela Hoya the paper champ quitter. Please stop trying to blur the truth. The little dude coudn't hurt you but he made you quit? wtf was that about? stop trying to make idiots out of the boxing fans. you're a paper champ who only beat B and C class fighters. you lost, I repeat, you lost ALL your fights against the elite fighters. stop making excuses out of your loss from Pacman. Accept that you can't hang with the top notch fighters, period!

  9. Pacquiao doesn’t hit hard enough... I’m basing that on my fight against Pacquiao. I could’ve stood there and put my face in front of him and he couldn’t have hurt me,” he said

Hilarious! Um, you fought Pacquiao? You call that a fight? That was a humble/respectful beatdown!

  11. de la hoya is such a frustrated mexican like other boxers, they are trying to look for anybody to stop pacman but they didn't find anybody yet now they go to the side of puerto rican boxer name cotto, they want to represent cotto to ease their pain from losing but if pacman beat cotto all mexican boxers will be silent and accept that pacman beat them, and say pacman is really great boxer.

  13. Oscar de la hoya just doesn't know what he's talking about. From 1st round to 8th round at their match with pacman, de la hoya just stood in front and let the pacman beat him! pacman like to knock de la hoya down in the earlier rounds but he just played with de la hoya, controlling his punching power not to knock de la hoya down! as de la hoya said in his blog,

"I'm basing that on my fight against pacquiao. I could've stood there and put my face in front of him and he couldn't have hurt me, he said."

Pacman did not knock de la hoya down b'coz for the sake of the fans to watch de la hoya to be knock down in the 9th round! where in Freddie roach told Pacman to knock de la hoya in the 9th, not in the earlier rounds.

  14. Oscar lots the bout but he won, who got more money that night? pacquiao or de la hoya? he was there just to make you guys help him on his way to be a billionaire and you help him.
About the next Pacman fight, well Cotto took a beating from Margarito with loades gloves (its not proven, but how a guy with gloves can do the type of wounds that Cotto had?) and still Margarito didn't dropped Cotto HE TOOK A KNEE. Cotto prove against Clottey that has a heart of a lion. I don't see Pacman winning this time, if somehow he can it wont be easy, no KO, the only one i see winning by KO is Cotto.

  15. Dela Hoya. Before I admired you a lot as a boxer. But making comments like that made me think otherwise. People should start calling you rotten boy instead of golden boy. Your comments were obviously rubbish and you are sourly loser!

  16. Believe it or not folks, comments from DLH that Manny has no power actually works to advantage. We want Cotto to believe that Manny has no power thereby making him believe he can take his punches in doing so, he might leave his self open and Manny can set him up with his powerful left punch. I hope Cotto underestimate Manny's power and listens to DLH. We should all thank DLH for making such a comment, it works in Manny's favor.

  17. yeah, like Cotto's dumb enough to listen to the biased media or Pacquiao jock riders. He knows what he has to do and will do it.
