Edwin Valero-Humberto Soto Could Happen On Pacquiao-Cotto Card Says Arum

Originally, the plan was to have Mexico's Humberto Soto and Venezuela's Edwin Valero both fight on the upcoming Pacquiao-Cotto card in November, but against selected opponents. However, promoter Bob Arum is now working hard on getting the two exciting fighters to face each other in Las Vegas. Even more exciting than this potential classic is the possibility that the winner could then face Manny Pacquiao (if, of course, Pac-Man beats Cotto). The man with all the news, Dan Rafael, has spoken to Arum, and he has written how the Top Rank boss is extremely keen on making the Soto-Valero fight..

"We believe we will be able to make Valero against Soto," Arum told Rafael this week. "That's the fight I want to make."

As great a potential fight as November 14th's main event is, a clash between the monstrous punching and unbeaten Valero and teak-tough Mexican warrior Soto could well be an even greater fight! In moving up to lightweight (surely, Valero will not drop down to 130-pounds), Soto would finally be getting the kind of super-fight he's always wanted.

The reigning WBC super-featherweight champ is still listed by BoxRec as defending his belt against Brazil's Josenilson Dos Santos on September 15th in his homeland, but "La Zorrita" should have no problems with his challenger, even though he is unbeaten. Valero, meanwhile, the current WBC lightweight king, has no fight on the cards - therefore it is to be hoped the fight with Soto can indeed happen.

ESPN reports that Valero must first be licensed by Nevada if the fight is to go ahead, and that this process will begin this coming week.

"If he's licensed, it looks like we can make the fight," Arum said.

There has been a growing trend as of late of loading big main events with tremendous under-cards. Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez has Chris John-Rocky Juarez II and Michael Katsidis as support, and now Pacquiao-Cotto looks set to have a superb supporting cast in action also.

Valero-Soto could be the best supporting bout of the year though. Both fighters are very much the real deal, both always come to fight hard and both men have a thrilling style. What's not to like!

29-year-old Soto, 48-7-2(31) has been fighting at world title level since 2005, and he has wins over the likes of Rocky Juarez, Oscar Leon and Bobby Pacquiao to his name. While 27-year-old Valero, 25-0(25) has been a world champ since 2006, and he has an astonishing nineteen 1st-round KO's on his resume. Soto, however, will likely be his toughest opponent to date.

  1. i really like to see soto and valero in under card of pacman and cotto it's like double header for boxing fans like me.i'll go with valero, he has an excellent and perfect record,i want to see what his style and how strong his power, if he can knock out soto in the first round then there is a possibility to fight pacman, or he can fight some of the toughest fighter in his division.as a fan i like to see that even just in pay per view.
