Let’s handle Cotto first, says Arum

While talks have swirled the past few weeks about a proposed March 13, 2010 fight for Manny Pacquiao, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum on Monday suddenly sounded cautious and not wanting to look too far ahead.

Hours after arriving in Las Vegas from a four-day sojourn to Baguio City – site of Pacquiao’s training camp for the Miguel Cotto fight until October 24 – Arum said Pacquiao need not look past the November 14 showdown and must concentrate on the Puerto Rican fighter.

Arum had told reporters during the first day of his visit to the country that the working date for Pacquiao’s 2010 debut would be in the second week of March assuming of course the Filipino beats Cotto in their much-anticipated match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The planned March fight is being eyed by Pacquiao’s people as a perfect event to pitch the fighter’s political aspirations.

Pacquiao said he will run for congress in the province of Sarangani and that a sensational showing would boost his chances of winning.

Still, Arum said that should everything falls into place – meaning Pacquiao topples Cotto – he will begin talks with the camp of Floyd Mayweather.

He said he will give himself two weeks to close out a deal with Mayweather’s camp, but if the talks fail, he will find somebody else.

Arum, meanwhile, expressed delight that Pacquiao’s training is right on track that his brief stay in the City of Pines was worth it.

“Everything is going great in Manny’s training camp and I am very happy that I was able to see him train,” said Arum.
