Cotto unfazed by heavy underdog tag against Pacquiao

LOS ANGELES, October 21, 2009 (AFP) - Heavy underdog Miguel Cotto will carry the hopes of his native Puerto Rico on his shoulders in next month's mega fight against Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

Unfazed by the long odds against him, the 27-year-old Cotto will be fighting for his place in boxing history in the 145-pound bout November 14 at the MGM Grand hotel and casino.

A win over six-time world champion Pacquiao would silence his critics and elevate Cotto to the title of best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, said trainer Joe Santiago.

"When that night comes and he wins, everyone will know that Puerto Rico does have the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Santiago said from Cotto's training camp at the Fight Factory Gym in Tampa, Florida.

Cotto doesn't need any more motivation than for people to say he doesn't have what it takes to beat Pacquiao.

"A lot of people are picking Pacquiao to beat him and he is motivated by that," Santiago said. "Miguel has a little extra because the people don't think he can win this fight.

"We know he can and he knows he can but he will have to show everyone what he is capable of doing against this type of opponent. He will come out with a little more fire."

Santiago says Cotto is younger, bigger, stronger and more determined. The pair are fighting at the catch weight of 145 pounds which is WBO welterweight champion Cotto's natural weight.

"Cotto is the first true welterweight that (Pacquiao) will have fought in his career. He is young and still in his prime so that is what Pacquiao is facing," Santiago said.

A classic boxer in the true sense of the word, Cotto is 34-1 with 27 knockouts. He has defeated a host of top fighters including Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, and Joshua Clottey. Cotto's only loss came last year to Mexico's Antonio Margarito.

Cotto's camp believes Pacquiao's speed won't be a problem and that the Filipino is a perfect fit for three-time world champion Cotto.

"Miguel brings a lot of things that Pacquiao doesn't have," said strength trainer Phil Landman. "And we are working on improving those areas."

Said Santiago, "I think that Miguel has shown everybody that he can deal with speed. I think with the type of rhythm that Manny brings to the fight that people don't think Miguel can stay with that speed.

"I not only think he can stay with the rhythm but I think he will enjoy fighting that kind of fight. It will be an interesting fight and Miguel will come out victorious by just doing what he always does, coming forward, throwing punches and being strong."

In his last fight, Cotto gutted out a split decision victory over Clottey in June. He suffered a nasty gash over his left eye from a head butt in the third round which had to be fixed by a plastic surgeon.

"It came out very nice, I have not seen anything wrong with his cut. I don't think it will be an issue in the fight," Santiago said.

Pacquiao has been training in Manila but has also been dealing with deadly typhoons and flooding that has ravaged his country in recent weeks. He is expected to arrive in the United States this weekend.

The undercard will feature a World Boxing Association super welterweight fight between champion Daniel Santos and American challenger Yuri Foreman.

Santiago said with Santos and Cotto on the same card it will be a double pleasure for Puerto Rican boxing fans.

"On the 13th we will be at 145 pounds no question. On the 14th it is going to be a great night. And on the 15th we are going to celebrate with the country of Puerto Rico," he said.

  1. i dont beleive that cotto will win against pacquiao, pls watch the last two fight of pacquiao..your boxer is not a dangerous fighter,he is still young to beat pacquiao..he need more experience to fight pacquaio.only mayweatther jr. can match pacquaio on the ring..my prediction, in 3rounds cotto will knockout, and i am sure cotto will not survive for this coming fight....just read on the survey in the internet and website today, still pacquiao the highest voting poles.this was happened also on the last two fight of pacquaio

  3. a pole or surveys is just opinion... by believing in surveys as your 1 reason for a fighter to win it just tells how much you know about boxing... "Cotto isnt dangerous" man you gotta be kidding me... Clotey told after the fight when they ask why he didnt atack kin the last round and he said "Cotto with just one eye still is or even more dangerous" he also said "Cotto hits harder than Margarito". I just think ppl forgot who miguel Cotto is. Pacquiao invaded the welterweight and without fighting and elite boxer on his prime ppl are saying he is the best at that weight, wich is ridiculous. Cotto fought the best of the welter on their prime, Mayweather skip Cotto in a "retirement" so that tells you what Mayweather was thinking about Cotto. Before Mayweather retirement the fight ppl wanted to see wasnt Pacquiao vs Meyweather, it was Cotto vs Mayweather. Even Freddy Roach is underestimating Cotto, he is telling that Cotto's tactic will be counter punching... MAN IS HE CRAZY?? Cotto can brawl, can box, can counter punch, has a lot a patience and last but not leat CAN CHANGE FROM REGULAR TO SOUTHPAW!!! Rethink about Cotto before saying stuff about him...

Cotto by KO in any round

  5. YOU PACMAN FANS ARE SO BIAS, AND MAKE THESE CRAZY PREDICTIONS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO FOUNDATION. FOR ANYONE TO SAY (INCLUDING ROACH)PAC WILL KNOCK COTTO OUT IN ONE ROUND IS NOT IN THEIR RIGHT STATE OF MIND. I LIKE PAC, HE'S GREAT BUT I THINK HE WILL BRING THE BEST OUT OF COTTO. AND YES PAC HAS POWER, SPEED AND ALL THAT OTHER STUFF EVERYONE KEEPS SAYING. NOT TO MENTION THE INCREASE IN HYPE SINCE BEATING RICKY HATTON WHO DOES NOT HAVE BIG WINS BUT ONE CONTRAVERSIAL WIN OVER COLLASO. AND ODH. WHOM EVERYONE KNOWS WAS DONE AND WAS MORE OF A PROMOTER AT THAT POINT THAN A FIGHTER. THIS IS PAC'S REAL TEST. THE QUESTION IS CAN PAC GET THROUGH COTTO. I THINK THE HYPE AND THE UNDERESTIMATING ON COTTO WILL BE A DETRIMENT TO PAC. STOP SLEEPING PEOPLE. WAKE UP, BE REALISTIC. PAC IS FIGHTING COTTO!

  6. yep like the last anonymous said... ppl think because Pacman KO Hatton that way, Cotto will fall the same way... come on ppl, took margarito 11 rounds with cement gloves to make cotto quit, because margarito didnt drop Cotto, he took a knee. ppl talk about the times that cotto was rocked but that was along time ago, not like pacman he got rocked in 2008 a few times by Marquez. The only reason Pacman won that fight was because Mr. Arum (the mobster) paid... because in the eyes of a 100 judges(on the fight night, not after the fight) he lost. Pacman legacy its like the one from a POP music genre its build by media... he got a skills and everything, but the place he is know he didn't earn it, he stole it in 2008.

  7. I can't help but laugh at the last anonymous' post. I know that the pac fans can be really annoying coz of their terrible admiration for Pacquiao but lets just state facts rather than ridiculous rumors. That fact of the matter is, Cotto is a great fighter and Pacquiao is a great fighter. Bottomline, its going to be a great fight and its for the good of the sport. Go Pac and Go Cotto! May the best man win and give us a great fight.

  9. Cotto will be knocked out, believe me man, it will be on 1st to 4th rounds only and the fight will not go on a distance...I have seen the previous fights of Cotto, almost same styles ansd strategies but when he faces Manny Pacquiao, oh man! it will be a crying day of Cotto. I can see a mismatch on this fight. I want to see Floyd Jr. vs Manny Pacquiao match-up, this would be a blockbuuster movie of the year hehehe. I don't want to see Floyd Jr. back out as Manny Pacquiao choosed to fight Mayweather Jr. in his next bout. Well, forget about Cotto will be certainly loss this fight. I believe it will be a TKO.
