The eagerly awaited “Fire Power” showdown between reigning pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto will boost boxing in Las Vegas for the second half of 2009.
That’s the view of Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer in a recent conversation with BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports in Las Vegas.
Kizer noted that there is still a great interest in boxing because “one of the positives that has been shown over the last few years that may not have been present earlier in the decade was the big fights are happening. It used to be one guy was with one network or one promoter and the other guy with another network or with another promoter and the fights just didn’t happen and if they happened they have been three years too late.”
Kizer remarked “that’s not the case now” pointing out to the welterweight battle between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Juan Manuel Marquez last September 19 in Las Vegas adding, “look at the fights coming up such as Cotto-Pacquiao in November (14)” also at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The NSAC executive director said “those are fights people want to see now and they are happening now and its going to be a great last half of the year for us here in Nevada and for boxing and I can’t imagine 2010 being any different.”
